The title sounds somewhat more dramatic that what I'm going to talk about, I'm not encouraging any thing here!.
No, what i really wanted to give a word about is our scare of all tings that kill us, and here I'm talking food and related things.
Coffee as an example, many studies (older and newer) shows that coffee can increase the chance of getting pancreatic and/or colorectal cancer (what ever that is), but also it might help reduce the chances of liver cancer and strokes.
Red wine is just another of these things, obviously excessive intake can cause damage to the liver, thats common sense right? But for a normal intake, studies have apparently shown that women's have an increased chance of breast cancer, but we have all heard that red wine is healthy right? and for a number of other things it is.
Just take a random thing and go search for "Health Risks" and "Health Benefits" for that thing, theres a good chance you will get plenty of hits on both.
The problem with all these things, is that it seems to give people unhealthy obsessions with things being "Healthy" or "Unhealty" in an almost religious way. Ive heard plenty of sentences like:
- "Don't you know coffee will kill you?"
- "Don't eat fast food, it makes you fat"
- "Don't smoke, you will get cancer"
And the list could continue, now the Don't smoke one properly require an explanation right?, well i don't smoke, not regularly anyways, but it happens that i take a cigar (Which won't have the same downsides since the smoke should not get to your lungs, otherwise you are going to regret it >.<) or a few cigarettes every new year. I'm quite sure that won't kill me.
As for the others, well bull shit, you can go down and get your self a burger and some fries every now and then if you like, you can also do that without getting fat, just DON'T do it every day and for all the meals in a day.
But why do we go from "Coffee might give you an increased chance of cancer" to "Drinking Coffee causes cancer", well the media, what headline do you think sells best? the last one obviously and people gets caught up in this and ban it all together, I'm just waiting for the headline "Being healthy kills" because being to healthy is bound to having consequences as well.
So, i think that we should all be given a list of diseases, then we can choose the ones we would like to die from, or put another way, would not mind dieing from, and from what we choose we could get a list of what we can drink, eat and do.
Now for all of you who would say "But i would not choose anything", well you can all go die of dehydration, and dehydration because that would happen before you would die of hunger.
Now this post is of course exaggerated, but all to make the point that we should not be scared of what we eat or drink might cause us to have an increased chance of cancer, strokes, heart attacks or whatever. Just live moderate, eat fast food but not to much, drink alcohol but not to much, drink coffee but not to much, hell don't exercise to much either, thats properly bad for you as well!...
And remember, this is my thoughts and opinions on the matter, make up your own and follow that
